Nairobi, Kenya – October 2, 2025 – Former Chief Justice David Maraga has officially joined the United Green Movement (UGM) as its party leader and 2027 presidential flagbearer, positioning himself as a fresh alternative to President William Ruto in the upcoming elections.
The announcement came after a Founding Members Forum held in Nairobi, where delegates unanimously endorsed Maraga as the party’s face in the 2027 polls.
Why David Maraga Chose UGM
Maraga explained that he took time to identify a party that aligned with his values and vision. He said his leadership would be grounded in the rule of law, justice, and constitutionalism, principles he upheld during his tenure as Chief Justice.
“I wish to thank the founding members of the UGM party for admitting me into the National Executive Committee. It’s an honour I don’t take for granted,” Maraga stated.
He pledged to traverse the country popularizing UGM and vowed to reset Kenya’s governance systems if elected president.
UGM’s Vision for 2027
UGM founder and former Ndhiwa MP Agostinho Neto emphasized that the 2027 elections would be about liberation and restoring accountability.
“The forum preselected you (Maraga) as the flagbearer, pending ratification at the 2027 National Delegates Conference. Your task is to inspire delegates nationwide and prove this forum made the right decision,” Neto remarked.
The party hopes to secure not only the presidency but also parliamentary and county assembly seats.
Context Ahead of 2027 Elections
Kenya’s political arena is already shaping up, with Maraga’s entry adding another heavyweight contender. The move is expected to challenge both Kenya Kwanza and Azimio coalitions. Analysts note that Maraga’s reputation as a reformist could appeal to voters disillusioned by traditional politics.
