A 55-year-old man accused of fatally attacking a General Service Unit (GSU) officer near State House, Nairobi, will remain in police custody for 14 days as detectives continue investigations into the shocking incident.
The suspect, identified as Kimunye Musyimi, a resident of Makueni County, appeared before a Nairobi court on Tuesday, where police sought more time to complete their probe.
According to initial investigations, Musyimi allegedly travelled from Makueni to Nairobi on Sunday night before carrying out the attack early Monday morning.
Suspect Pleads for Medical Attention
In court, Musyimi—who appeared frail and limping—requested permission to seek medical treatment. The court directed that he receive medical care under police supervision while in custody.
The incident occurred at around 8:10 a.m. near State House Gate D along Dennis Pritt Road, when the suspect, armed with a bow and arrows, confronted officers manning the entrance.
Despite repeated orders to surrender, Musyimi reportedly fired an arrow that struck Police Constable Ramadhan Mattanka in the ribs.
Officer Succumbs to Injuries
Constable Mattanka was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) but sadly succumbed to his injuries while receiving emergency treatment. His body was later moved to the hospital mortuary pending a post-mortem examination.
Police officers from the General Service Unit (GSU) swiftly subdued and arrested the attacker, preventing further casualties.
NPS Condemns the Attack
In a statement, National Police Service (NPS) spokesperson Muchiri Njaga condemned the attack, describing it as a “heinous act” and commended the officers for their quick action.
“The National Police Service condemns this heinous act and commends the officers for their swift response, which prevented further harm,” read part of the statement.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are continuing with forensic and psychological evaluations to determine the suspect’s motive and mental state.
