The Last Village Lodge zipline accident involving former trainee Ruth Moraa has resurfaced online after new allegations of negligence. Moraa, who suffered a broken spine two years ago, has accused the Machakos-based lodge of failing to ensure safety during the incident.
In a detailed statement, the Lodge denies the allegations and maintains that the accident resulted from unauthorised access to the zipline by Moraa and another individual. Management insists the zipline—Kenya’s second-longest—has an excellent safety record with no customer-related accidents.
The Lodge describes the incident as an isolated breach of protocol by staff and not a failure of the institution’s safety systems. It stresses that all activities follow strict safety guidelines designed to prevent such incidents.
According to the Lodge, Moraa was rushed to a Level 4 Hospital in Kangundo after the accident. Doctors recommended emergency treatment requiring her consent, but the facility claims her family declined the intervention, limiting what could be done.
Moraa later filed a suit at the High Court in Machakos, which was transferred to the Employment and Labour Relations Court, where it remains active. The Lodge says the pending case prevents them from commenting further and urges all parties to let the court decide.
Since the accident, Moraa has been wheelchair-dependent and continues to accuse the Lodge of negligence—claims the Lodge disputes.
