Bomet County, Kenya – Monday, November 10, 2025 — A nine-year-old girl has died, while her 13-year-old brother is fighting for his life at the Longisa County Referral Hospital, after a brutal beating allegedly by their mother.
Police say the children were attacked after sneaking into a neighbor’s garden and stealing pieces of banana fruit.
Mother Arrested After Fatal Assault
According to a police report filed at Konoin Police Station, the suspect, Joan Chepkemoi Rono, 34, allegedly used a wooden rod to discipline her two children.
The victims, Joan Chepkoech and her 13-year-old brother, suffered serious injuries and were rushed to Longisa County Referral Hospital by concerned neighbors.
Unfortunately, the younger child, Joan, died shortly after admission. Doctors said she had blood oozing from her mouth and her face was swollen. Her brother remains hospitalized with multiple injuries.
Police confirmed that the suspect was arrested at the hospital, where she had accompanied her children.
Community in Shock
Residents of Taboino village in Konoin Sub-county expressed disbelief over the incident. Many described the mother as a calm and private person but noted that she had recently seemed stressed due to financial challenges.
Local leaders and child rights advocates have urged parents to avoid violent discipline and to seek counseling or community support when overwhelmed.
According to UNICEF Kenya, cases of child abuse and corporal punishment remain widespread, especially in rural parts of the country.
Investigations Underway
Police in Konoin Sub-county have launched investigations into the tragic case. The suspect is in custody and is expected to face murder and child abuse charges.
“The matter is under active investigation. We urge residents to report similar incidents early to prevent such tragedies,” a police spokesperson told Citizen Digital
Rising Cases of Domestic Violence
The heartbreaking incident adds to a disturbing rise in domestic violence and child abuse across Kenya.
Data from the National Crime Research Centre (NCRC) shows a 15% increase in reported child assault cases in the last year. Experts link this surge to economic hardship, mental health struggles, and social stress.
Child protection groups continue to urge communities to report violence early and offer support to struggling parents.
