Anti-terrorism officers say they have dismantled what they describe as one of the most complex terrorism facilitation networks uncovered in Kenya, marking a major breakthrough in the ongoing fight against violent extremism.
Nine people — among them a prominent Nairobi lawyer — are expected to face terrorism-related charges in the coming days after weeks of intelligence-driven investigations and coordinated operations led by the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU).
The case centres around a group of about ten young recruits arrested earlier this year as they allegedly prepared to leave Kenya. According to investigators, their arrests were instrumental in exposing the wider network.
Police say the recruits were radicalised both online and through local contacts before being transported through Kenya to Puntland in northern Somalia, and eventually onward to Yemen. Security officials describe these routes as key transit points for individuals attempting to link up with ISIS affiliates, particularly as the group comes under pressure in other regions.
“It operates like a conveyor belt,” a senior ATPU officer said. “Kenya serves as a corridor. Once they reach Puntland, arrangements are made to cross the Gulf of Aden into Yemen, where they connect with established ISIS cells.”
Investigators believe the Nairobi lawyer — well known for defending clients in terrorism cases — became entangled in the network while representing radicalised youths facing charges in Kenyan courts.
“He initially appeared only as defence counsel in several terrorism trials,” an officer familiar with the probe explained. “But over time, we believe he shifted from providing legal representation to participating directly in the facilitation network.”
Authorities claim that some of the lawyer’s legal fees were paid by extremist financiers linked to ISIS, and that he eventually played a more active role in coordinating the network’s activities.
“It appears he was gradually absorbed into the broader structure,” the investigator added. “His involvement soon went beyond the courtroom.”
The lawyer is expected to be charged with terror financing, membership in a terrorist organisation, and involvement in an organised criminal network. The specific charges will be confirmed once all nine suspects are brought before the court.
