The Milimani Magistrate’s Court has acquitted DJ Brownskin, born Michael Macharia Njiri, of all charges linked to the death of his wife, citing insufficient evidence.
In a ruling delivered on Thursday, trial magistrate Caroline Nyanguthi said the prosecution failed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt, leading to the DJ’s acquittal on all counts.
Brownskin had been charged with aiding suicide, with prosecutors alleging that he counselled his wife, Sharon Njeri Mwangi, to take her own life on July 29, 2022, at their home in Kariobangi South, Buruburu Sub-County. He was also accused of neglecting to prevent a felony by failing to take reasonable steps to stop the act.
The court heard that Sharon died after ingesting poison. Prosecutors further alleged that Brownskin watched as she took the substance, claims that attracted widespread public attention after a video allegedly showing the incident circulated online.
In an additional charge, the DJ was accused of destroying potential evidence by deleting suicide-related material from his phone on June 1, 2023, despite allegedly knowing it would be required for judicial proceedings.
However, Magistrate Nyanguthi ruled that the evidence presented did not sufficiently establish the elements of the offences as charged, ultimately acquitting Brownskin on all counts.
DJ Brownskin had been arraigned in court in June 2023 following investigations into his wife’s death.
