A family in Nairobi’s Umoja One estate is demanding the immediate arrest of a military officer they have linked to the death of their relative, Alphy Migasha.
The family alleges that Migasha was brutally attacked and beaten by a military officer identified as Nicholas Njue Ireri, but police failed to take action even after he later succumbed to his injuries. Police, however, say further steps will be guided by the outcome of an autopsy.
According to CCTV footage recorded on December 22, Migasha was seated outside a liquor joint in Umoja One when a man approached and briefly confronted him. The confrontation quickly turned violent, with the man forcefully dragging Migasha to the ground and repeatedly assaulting him as onlookers attempted to intervene.
After the attack, the assailant is seen calmly walking away, leaving Migasha badly injured and lying helpless on the ground.
Family members say they were alerted shortly after the incident and rushed Migasha to Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital for emergency treatment. Doctors confirmed he had sustained serious injuries, including fractured ribs, a broken leg, and chest injuries. He was placed on medication as the family reported the matter at Buruburu Police Station.
Buruburu DCIO Simon Kirui has since confirmed that the suspect is a military officer. He said police are actively handling the case and are awaiting post-mortem results, which will play a crucial role in determining the next course of action.
Migasha’s mother, Stella Okinda, expressed frustration with the handling of the case, claiming the family has cooperated fully with police but has not received the help they expected.
Later, the family identified the attacker as Nicholas Njue Ireri, alleging that he is also the proprietor of the entertainment joint where the incident occurred. They further claim the suspect has been linked to two similar incidents in the past and has issued threats to the family following the assault.
Ms. Okinda also alleged that the suspect took her son’s money and bag after the attack before leaving in his vehicle.
Tragically, Migasha later died from injuries sustained during the beating, leaving his family devastated and calling for justice.
