Murang’a-based pastor Jimmy Irungu has launched an ambitious 80-hour tree-hugging challenge in Murang’a Town, aiming to raise awareness about cancer while also setting a new endurance record.
The initiative officially kicked off on Sunday, January 4, 2026, at 9:00 pm, with Pastor Irungu vowing to remain in continuous physical contact with a single tree until Thursday, January 8, at 5:00 am, if successful.
Speaking at the start of the challenge, the clergyman said the endurance feat is dedicated to cancer patients and survivors, whom he described as symbols of strength, resilience, and hope.
“This challenge is meant to honour cancer patients and survivors who go through unimaginable pain but continue to fight every single day,” Irungu said.
Using Endurance to Spark Cancer Awareness
Pastor Irungu explained that his goal goes beyond breaking a record, noting that cancer remains one of the leading causes of death in Kenya, yet public awareness and early screening remain low.
By undertaking the physically demanding challenge in a public space, he hopes to spark conversations around early detection, treatment, and support for those living with cancer.
Inspired by Recent Tree-Hugging Feats
The challenge comes just weeks after Kenyan environmentalist and activist Truphena Muthoni completed a 72-hour tree-hugging attempt, which has attracted national attention. Muthoni’s attempt is still awaiting official confirmation by Guinness World Records.
While Pastor Irungu has not indicated whether his attempt will be submitted to Guinness World Records, the 80-hour duration would surpass Muthoni’s time should he complete it successfully.
Public Support and Vigil
Residents of Murang’a Town have begun visiting the site to offer encouragement, prayers, and moral support as the hours progress. Local leaders and health advocates have also welcomed the initiative, saying it creatively highlights the need for compassion and solidarity with cancer patients.
The challenge is ongoing, with many Kenyans now watching closely to see whether Pastor Irungu will endure the full 80 hours and cement his place in the growing list of extreme awareness-driven endurance feats in the country.
