“Tulitetea the Wrong Woman?” Mercy Masai Casts Doubt on Marion Naipei Narrative

Kenyan social media personality and philanthropist Mercy Masai has weighed in on the ongoing controversy surrounding Marion Naipei, questioning the motives behind the viral figure’s growing media presence.

Reacting to the widely circulated story, Masai suggested that the public may have rushed to support the wrong person, arguing that Naipei’s continued media interviews appear carefully calculated. According to Masai, the young woman seems fully aware of how to leverage the attention generated by the scandal.

“Hapo kidogo tulitetea the wrong woman. Hizo interviews msichana anapiga, she knows exactly what she is doing. Anyway ati mlisema anatoka side gani ya Kajiado?” Masai remarked.

Marion Naipei and James Opande, a US-based Kenyan medic, have been at the centre of a highly publicised legal and social media storm after a private video of Naipei surfaced online without her consent.

The controversy began when the video—allegedly recorded while Naipei was intoxicated and in a vulnerable state—was leaked and widely shared across social media platforms. Naipei has accused Opande of secretly recording the footage during their relationship and later allowing it to circulate online.

The case has ignited intense debate in Kenya around consent, exploitation, victimhood, and social media accountability, with public opinion sharply divided. While many initially rallied behind Naipei in solidarity, emerging commentary—such as Masai’s remarks—has fueled renewed scrutiny over how viral narratives are shaped and sustained in the media.
