Controversial televangelist Victor Kanyari has claimed that he made up to KSh1 million per day for nearly four years through his infamous “310 prayers” scheme, which was later exposed as a scam.
Speaking in a recent interview, Kanyari alleged that the initiative generated massive daily earnings at its peak, drawing contributions from thousands of followers who believed the prayers would deliver miracles and instant blessings.
The scheme, which came to public attention in 2014, involved Kanyari urging congregants and viewers of his television programme to send KSh310 as a “seed” in exchange for divine intervention, including healing, financial breakthroughs and personal success.
However, investigations by mainstream media later revealed that the preacher had fabricated testimonies and manipulated desperate believers, leading to public outrage and the eventual collapse of the operation. The exposé confirmed that the claims of miracles were false and that unsuspecting members of the public had been systematically defrauded.
The scandal had far-reaching consequences for Kanyari’s personal and professional life. His then wife, renowned gospel singer Betty Bayo, publicly announced the end of their marriage shortly after the revelations, citing irreconcilable differences linked to the controversy.
Despite the exposure and backlash, Kanyari has continued to make headlines over the years with controversial remarks and claims, remaining one of Kenya’s most polarising religious figures.
