The Kenyan passport has recorded a notable improvement on the global stage, climbing five places to rank 68th in the latest Henley Passport Index, marking a modest recovery in international travel freedom for Kenyan citizens.
The rise follows a recent slump in October 2025, when Kenya’s passport dropped to 73rd place, allowing access to just 70 destinations visa-free or with a visa on arrival. In the newly released 2026 index, Kenyan passport holders can now travel to 69 destinations without securing a visa in advance, reflecting a gradual rebound after years of decline.
The Henley Passport Index, which ranks passports based on travel freedom, relies on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). It assesses 199 passports against 227 global destinations and is updated monthly to reflect changes in visa regimes, diplomatic relations, and international agreements.
Kenya’s passport ranking has fluctuated significantly over the past two decades. It peaked in the mid-50s in the early 2000s before sliding to a historic low of 77th in 2021. The current ranking signals an upward trend, placing Kenya among the top 10 strongest passports in Africa, trailing only countries such as Seychelles, Mauritius, and South Africa.
Analysts say the improvement, though incremental, is a positive indicator for Kenya’s global standing, with potential benefits for trade, tourism, and international mobility for its citizens.
