The National Assembly has approved the appointment of Mama Ida Odinga as Kenya’s ambassador to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
Lawmakers across the political divide praised Ida’s long-standing contributions to the country, expressing confidence in her ability to represent Kenya effectively at the international environmental body headquartered in Nairobi.
MPs Rally Behind Ida’s Appointment
The motion was backed by Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wa and Minority Leader Junet Mohammed, who both defended the nomination and dismissed critics opposed to her appointment.
“I have no doubt that she will be able to leverage her diplomatic credentials, teaching experience, and the social capital she has built over the years. Mama Ida Odinga is not an ordinary figure in this country or the world,” Ichung’wa told the House.
Confidence in Her Diplomatic Role
MPs noted that Ida’s background in education and public service, as well as her global exposure, positions her well to advance Kenya’s interests within UNEP.
Her appointment places her at the centre of international environmental diplomacy, as UNEP plays a critical role in shaping global environmental policy, climate action, and sustainable development initiatives.
The approval now clears the way for her to formally assume the ambassadorial role representing Kenya at the UN agency.
