President William Ruto has brushed off renewed efforts to revive the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition, insisting the opposition alliance does not present a serious challenge to his re-election bid in the 2027 general election.
Speaking on Sunday after officiating the opening of the Africa Inland Church (AIC) Pipeline in Embakasi, Nairobi County, Ruto said his political rivals should instead focus on preparing for a tough contest at the ballot.
“I am asking the people I am competing with to prepare well. We understand this politics so well,” the president said.
Ruto further downplayed attempts to reorganise Azimio, arguing that the coalition lost its political strength following the exit of its former key affiliate, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
His remarks come amid renewed activity within the opposition camp following the appointment of Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka as the new party leader of the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition.
The decision was made under the guidance of former President Uhuru Kenyatta, who chairs the coalition, sparking fresh debate over the opposition’s strategy ahead of the 2027 polls.
Despite the developments, Ruto maintained that the reconstituted coalition lacks the momentum to threaten his leadership.
