Police in Matungulu, Machakos County, have launched investigations after the body of an unidentified man was discovered dumped in a dam under disturbing circumstances.
The body, found early Saturday morning, had been stuffed inside a sack and was seen floating on the water before being retrieved by residents and local boda boda operators.
According to police, preliminary findings suggest the man may have been killed elsewhere and his body transported to the site before being disposed of in the dam. Officers say the use of a sack points to a deliberate attempt to conceal the crime.
“This appears to be a murder case, but investigations are ongoing to establish the exact cause of death,” a police source said.
Eyewitness accounts paint an even more gruesome picture, with some claiming the body had been mutilated before being dumped. Those who first responded to the scene said they were alerted to a suspicious sack floating in the water and moved quickly to confirm their fears.
Boda boda operators, led by their local chairman Boniface Kioko, said the deceased was not known in the area, raising concerns that he may have been killed elsewhere.
Kioko noted that they immediately informed officers from Kalandini Police Post, who worked alongside colleagues from Tala Police Station to retrieve the body from the dam with the help of residents.
Witnesses reported that the man had visible head injuries and was dressed in gloves, an apron, and trousers – details that have added to the mystery surrounding his identity and the circumstances leading to his death.
Investigators are also exploring the possibility that the victim was strangled using a rope used to tie the sack. There are further suspicions that he could have been a boda boda rider who was attacked and robbed of his motorcycle before being killed.
The body has since been moved to the Kangundo Level 4 Hospital mortuary, where it awaits identification and a postmortem examination.
Authorities say efforts are ongoing to identify the victim and track down those responsible, as residents express growing concern over rising insecurity in the area.
