The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has initiated disciplinary proceedings to remove Edwin Sifuna from his position as the party’s Secretary General over alleged gross misconduct.
Show-Cause Letter Issued
In a show-cause letter signed by ODM Chairperson Gladys Wanga, Sifuna is accused of publicly contradicting official party positions and resolutions.
The party cited his appearances on Citizen TV’s The Explainer programme on July 22, 2025, and February 3, 2026, where he allegedly made statements inconsistent with ODM’s stance, including declaring the ODM-UDA broad-based arrangement “dead.”
Allegations of Undermining Party
According to the letter, Sifuna is accused of repeatedly issuing contradictory statements despite attending internal meetings where party positions were agreed upon.
ODM says his actions have caused confusion and undermined party unity and public standing.
Unsanctioned Political Activities
The party also accuses Sifuna of engaging in unauthorised political activities under the “Linda Mwananchi Initiative,” which it claims were conducted outside officially sanctioned party programmes.
Absence from Key Meetings
Further allegations include failure to attend crucial party meetings, including a Central Committee meeting on January 12, 2026, and National Executive Council (NEC) meetings held on February 11 and March 4, 2026.
Disciplinary Timeline
Sifuna has been directed to respond to the show-cause letter by April 8, 2026, and to appear before a disciplinary panel on April 10, 2026.
ODM has warned that failure to respond will result in the matter being determined in his absence, in line with the party constitution.
Internal Party Tensions
The developments come amid rising tensions within ODM, with factions emerging, including the Sifuna-linked Linda Mwananchi group, which is seen as challenging the party’s internal power structure.
The outcome of the disciplinary process could significantly shape the party’s leadership and direction ahead of future political engagements.
