At least one person has been confirmed dead following a violent gun attack that caused a lorry to roll along the Loyangalani–Laisamis road in Baragoi, Samburu County.
According to police reports, the incident occurred on April 28 in the Seren area when armed assailants ambushed a lorry transporting livestock and passengers. The driver, who was heading to Laisamis with over 100 sheep and goats, told authorities that four gunmen opened fire on the vehicle, triggering the حادث that led to the lorry overturning.
The attack resulted in the death of one passenger, while 13 others sustained multiple injuries and were rushed to hospital for treatment. Five individuals escaped the incident without injuries.
In addition to the human casualties, the attackers killed at least 39 goats and made away with 36 others, highlighting the persistent threat of livestock theft in the region.
Police who responded to the scene towed the damaged lorry to South Horr Police Post as investigations got underway. Security agencies have since launched a manhunt for the suspects, who fled the scene immediately after the attack.
Authorities note that Baragoi and surrounding areas remain under a special security operation aimed at curbing cattle rustling, a long-standing issue that continues to endanger lives and livelihoods in parts of northern Kenya.
The incident underscores the ongoing insecurity along key transport routes in Samburu, where residents often rely on livestock trucks as a primary means of transport.
