A vehicle caught fire after crashing into a pedestrian footbridge along Mbagathi Way in Nairobi, leaving it extensively damaged and triggering an emergency response.
Videos circulating online showed the vehicle engulfed in flames while lodged on the staircase of the footbridge.
The footage captured thick flames and smoke billowing from the wreckage as onlookers gathered at a safe distance while emergency responders attended to the scene.
The videos also appeared to show significant damage to part of the pedestrian footbridge.
Sections of the metal guardrail along the staircase were bent and torn off, with debris from both the vehicle and the damaged structure scattered across the stairs and the surrounding area.
Traffic police officers secured the scene as emergency teams responded. An ambulance also arrived shortly after the crash, although it was not immediately clear whether anyone had been injured.
By daybreak, recovery operations were underway.
Footage recorded on Tuesday morning showed a breakdown truck and a crane removing the burnt-out vehicle from the damaged footbridge.
The crane lifted the charred wreckage onto a recovery truck as members of the public watched from nearby.
Traffic continued to flow along sections of Mbagathi Way during the recovery exercise.
The daylight footage further revealed the extent of the damage to the footbridge, with sections of the staircase railing left hanging loose.
Authorities had not immediately established how the vehicle ended up on the elevated pedestrian footbridge, which is reserved exclusively for pedestrians.
Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing.
