Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi has sparked fresh political debate after calling on leaders from Nyanza and Western Kenya to begin early political realignment aimed at producing Kenya’s next president in 2032.
Mbadi Urges Regions to Unite After 2027
Speaking on the future of national politics, Mbadi said it was time for regions outside Kenya’s traditional political power centres to organise themselves ahead of the post-2027 political transition.
“Nyanza and Western, tutakaa chini tujipange after 2027 as we progress to 2032,” Mbadi said.
The CS argued that the two regions should position themselves to produce a president once William Ruto completes his final term in office.
Questions Historical Presidency Pattern
Mbadi observed that Kenya’s presidency since independence has largely rotated between leaders from the Kikuyu and Kalenjin communities.
According to him, it is time for other communities to also have an opportunity to lead the country.
“It cannot be that 65 years after independence there are only two communities which have produced presidents of this country,” he stated.
Remarks Likely to Trigger Political Debate
The Treasury CS further said Kenya’s 42 communities all possess the leadership capacity and competence to govern the country.
“Kikuyus and Kalenjins have produced presidents of this country. We must tell them 2032, we don’t want to see a Kikuyu or a Kalenjin. We must allow other communities. We are 42 communities in this country, and each one of us has the capacity, competence and ability to lead this country,” Mbadi said.
Western Kenya Leaders Eyeing Presidency
Mbadi also claimed that several leaders from Western Kenya already harbour presidential ambitions and are preparing for future political contests.
His remarks are expected to intensify national political conversations and succession politics well ahead of the 2027 and 2032 election cycles.
