A social media advertisement has helped police crack a suspected mobile phone theft and resale network operating in Nairobi’s Central Business District, leading to the recovery of 22 mobile phones and the arrest of two suspects.
The breakthrough came after a woman whose phone had been stolen at a school along Ngong Road spotted an online advertisement featuring a handset that closely resembled her missing device.
She immediately reported the matter to police, triggering an investigation that would eventually uncover what detectives believe is a larger criminal operation.
How the Phone Was Stolen
According to the complainant, a stranger visited Rudan Junior School along Ngong Road claiming he was seeking admission for his son.
The woman told police that the man engaged her in conversation before tricking her into leaving her mobile phone on a table while she attended to his request.
Moments later, the suspect allegedly grabbed the handset and disappeared.
Security cameras reportedly captured the suspect leaving the school after the theft.
Police Track Phone to Nairobi CBD
Using mobile phone tracking technology, investigators traced the device’s signal to a building near Khoja Stage in Nairobi’s CBD.
What initially appeared to be a routine phone recovery operation quickly escalated after officers searched the premises and discovered numerous other devices suspected to have been stolen from members of the public.
Police recovered the complainant’s handset together with 21 additional mobile phones, bringing the total number of recovered devices to 22.
Two Suspects Arrested
Authorities arrested two suspects found inside the premises and placed them in custody pending further investigations.
Detectives are now working to establish the ownership of the recovered phones and determine whether the suspects are linked to a wider network involved in the theft, trafficking and resale of stolen electronic devices.
The recovered handsets are expected to undergo forensic examination as investigators seek to identify additional victims and possible accomplices.
Major Blow to Phone Theft Syndicates
Police described the recovery as a significant breakthrough in the fight against mobile phone theft in Nairobi.
The operation highlights how technology, surveillance footage and public vigilance can help law enforcement track stolen property and dismantle criminal networks operating within the city.
Authorities have urged members of the public to report suspicious online advertisements and verify the source of second-hand electronic devices before making purchases, warning that some may be stolen property being resold through illegal channels.
