Naivasha, Kenya – Tuesday, May 19, 2026 (EAT) — Chesumei Member of Parliament Paul Biego has broken his silence after losing a truck worth more than Ksh20 million during violent protests witnessed in Naivasha on Monday.
In a statement, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) legislator said his Actros 3340 truck was completely destroyed after protesters allegedly attacked and set it ablaze during demonstrations linked to the ongoing nationwide matatu strike and anti-fuel protests.
According to Biego, the truck had successfully transported flour from Eldoret to Kanini Haraka Wholesalers before attackers intercepted it in Naivasha, Nakuru County.
MP Claims North Rift Vehicles Are Being Targeted
Biego alleged that the attackers identified the truck as originating from the North Rift region, raising fears of what he described as coordinated targeting of vehicles from the area.
“This is not just a truck. It represents years of sleepless nights, relentless sacrifice, and honest hard work,” Biego said.
The MP described the incident as both an economic and emotional blow, saying many livelihoods depended on the vehicle.
“What’s more heartbreaking and deeply unsettling is that there seems to be a coordinated active targeting and monitoring of vehicles and trucks from North Rift in this ongoing violence,” he added.
Transport Protests Turn Violent
The incident occurred amid escalating unrest triggered by the ongoing transport sector strike over fuel prices and operational costs.
As previously reported by Sauce.co.ke in its coverage of the nationwide matatu strike and anti-fuel protests, demonstrations in several towns turned chaotic, leading to destruction of property, road blockades, and violent confrontations.
Biego condemned the attacks, saying innocent business owners and transport operators were suffering massive losses despite having no involvement in the protests.
DCI Pursuing Suspects in Vehicle Torchings
The burning of Biego’s truck came just hours after the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed that detectives were pursuing suspects linked to another vehicle torching incident along Thika Road.
In a statement, the DCI said investigators were analysing viral videos believed to show individuals involved in setting a Mazda CX-5 ablaze during Monday’s protests.
Earlier, Sauce.co.ke also reported on the arrest of Central Police Station OCS Dishen Angoya over the alleged unlawful release of 64 suspects detained during the demonstrations.
The agency said the incidents endangered lives and caused extensive property damage. Detectives have since appealed to members of the public to help identify suspects captured in the footage.
Growing Pressure on Government
The transport protests have intensified pressure on the government after commuters, businesses, and schools faced major disruptions across the country.
On Monday evening, the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) announced revised fuel prices after holding lengthy consultations with transport stakeholders.
Under the new review:
- Diesel prices dropped by Ksh10.06 per litre
- Kerosene prices increased by Ksh38.60 per litre
- Super petrol prices remained unchanged
However, transport operators have maintained that the adjustments remain insufficient.
Background
The nationwide protests erupted after rising fuel prices increased operating costs for matatu operators, truck owners, boda boda riders, and taxi drivers. Demonstrations later spread to several towns, including Nairobi, Naivasha, Nakuru, and Eldoret.
Security agencies continue to investigate cases of arson, looting, and destruction of property linked to the unrest.
