Mathare social justice activist Davis Lichuma has been found alive after being missing for more than three days amid allegations that he was abducted by individuals believed to be police officers.
According to witnesses, Lichuma was discovered abandoned outside Kenyatta National Hospital on Sunday night. Witnesses said he appeared heavily sedated, physically weak and unable to communicate.
“He looked like he was tortured and looked so confused. I tried talking to him, but he could not respond,” one witness said.
He was subsequently rushed to a hospital in Nairobi, where he is receiving treatment.
Disappeared During June 25 Protests
Lichuma, a member of the Social Justice Centre, reportedly disappeared on June 25, 2026, while participating in events marking the second anniversary of the 2024 Gen Z protests.
Human rights groups and fellow activists had earlier issued the government with a 24-hour ultimatum demanding his release, warning that they would organize fresh demonstrations if his whereabouts were not disclosed.
According to civil society organisations, Lichuma was allegedly picked up by unknown individuals during the protests.
More Activists Reappear Alleging Torture
Lichuma is among several activists who were reported missing following the June 25 commemorations.
Five others have since resurfaced with visible injuries, alleging they were tortured before being abandoned in different parts of Nairobi. They include:
- Frederick Odhiambo
- Collins Otieno
- Elijah Alam
- Michael Ngige
- Muteti Mulinge
Human rights organisations have called on the police to take responsibility and provide accountability over the reported disappearances.
Several People Still Missing
Despite Lichuma’s return, concerns remain over the whereabouts of several other individuals who have not yet been traced, including:
- Macmillan Kiarie
- Abdulaziz Budaand
- Michael Oloo
The National Police Service (NPS) has stated that investigations into the reported disappearances are ongoing and has maintained that efforts are underway to account for all missing persons.
