Police in Kajiado County have arrested three suspects linked to last week’s theft of a Tanzanian truck loaded with maize worth Ksh.1.7 million. The lorry, which was headed to Nairobi’s Industrial Area, was stolen under mysterious circumstances, according to a police report dated March 19.
The truck’s driver had parked at Maduka ya Juu in Kajiado when the incident occurred. He was accompanied by a woman “physically known to him,” whom he had picked up at the Kenya-Tanzania Namanga border.
“While the driver briefly stepped away to use a nearby restroom, he returned to find the woman holding two soft drinks. After consuming one, he began feeling drowsy and fell asleep inside the vehicle,” detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) reported.
The driver reportedly regained consciousness the next day, only to find himself lying on the ground with both the lorry and the woman missing.
A swift police investigation led to significant forensic breakthroughs, ultimately resulting in the recovery of the lorry in Embakasi. However, the truck had been stripped of its cargo.
“Swift investigations led to crucial forensic breakthroughs, culminating in the recovery of the lorry stripped of its cargo and abandoned in Embakasi,” the DCI confirmed.
Authorities arrested Rachael Nyambura Njuu, 29, Ann Nyambura Maina, 32, and 39-year-old Mark Oluoch Mumasaba. The three suspects are set to be arraigned in court.
Detectives further established that the stolen maize had been offloaded in Kiandutu, Thika, and later sold to Swami Z Millers in Makongeni.
The millers have been summoned for questioning, while the truck’s driver remains in police custody as investigations continue.
