A Multimedia University (MMU) student suspected of killing Sylvia Kemunto, a first-year Mass Communications and Computer Science student, has surrendered to authorities after days on the run.
The suspect, a first-year Electrical Engineering student, turned himself in at Sultan Hamud Police Station in Makueni on Thursday night.
Kemunto was reported missing by her mother, Triza Kwamboka, after she failed to reach her on March 30. Concerned, she visited the university, only to discover that her daughter was missing. The college management confirmed that Kemunto had not been seen, prompting Kwamboka to file a missing person report at Lang’ata Police Station.
Investigations led police to a water tank on the university’s rooftop, where Kemunto’s body was found. Authorities believe she was killed in her hostel room, and her body was later dragged to the rooftop and dumped in the tank.
Kemunto had reportedly complained to her mother about a fellow student who was persistently making advances toward her, despite her clear rejection. Her mother advised her to “stand firm” and resist the unwanted attention.
Nairobi Police Commander George Sedah confirmed that the suspect fled to his rural home after the murder. A police team from Nairobi has since traveled to Sultan Hamud to bring him back for questioning.
Authorities are now investigating whether the suspect acted alone and his exact motivation for the crime.
