Three civilians who were detained at Central Police Station in Nairobi on the night of blogger Albert Ojwang’s death have now been arrested in connection with the incident, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has confirmed.
According to IPOA, the suspects allegedly tortured Ojwang to death under instructions from police officers while he was in custody.
The three individuals had initially been detained for unrelated offences, whose details have not yet been made public, but were reportedly released shortly after Ojwang’s death.
Following a detailed investigation by IPOA, the trio was re-arrested on Sunday, June 15, and are currently being held at separate facilities — Kilimani, Muthangari, and Kileleshwa Police Stations.
Their lawyer confirmed the development, stating:
“They had been initially detained on a miscellaneous application and held for five days before being released without formal charges.”
IPOA has indicated that the three suspects will be arraigned in court on Monday, alongside Officer Commanding Station (OCS) Samson Taalam, who is also a key suspect in the case and is currently held at Lang’ata Police Station.
Ojwang’s death has sparked widespread public outrage, with CCTV footage and autopsy reports suggesting he was brutally assaulted and left unattended for nearly 30 minutes after being brought to Mbagathi Hospital, where he was later declared dead on arrival.
