Police in Bungoma South have launched investigations into a tragic incident in which a man was lynched by a mob in Khalaba village after being mistaken for an intruder.
The victim, a casual labourer, had entered the homestead of his former mother-in-law in an effort to reconcile with his estranged wife. However, his unexpected presence raised suspicion among family members and neighbors.
An alarm was raised, attracting villagers who descended on the man, pelting him with stones and leaving him with fatal injuries. He succumbed to the injuries hours later.
According to the police, efforts are underway to identify and arrest the individuals involved in the mob attack.
Authorities have condemned the lynching, warning the public against taking the law into their own hands. Police noted that mob justice remains a serious criminal offense.
“Most of the suspects are innocent, and some are framed before being killed,” police cautioned, reiterating the dangers of vigilante justice and urging communities to report suspected crimes to law enforcement instead of resorting to violence.
