At least three Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldiers were killed and seven others injured on Tuesday, July 15, after their military vehicle ran over an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) on the volatile Kiunga–Sankuri road in Lamu County.
The tragic incident occurred in the Badaah area, a region increasingly vulnerable to suspected militant activity, according to police reports and local witnesses.
“The soldiers were returning from Sankuri after transporting their colleagues when the explosion occurred,” confirmed Lamu East Deputy County Commissioner George Kubai.
The blast led to the immediate deaths of three soldiers, while seven others sustained injuries and were promptly evacuated to Kiunga Hospital for emergency treatment. Authorities have not yet disclosed the identities of the fallen soldiers as families are being notified.
The Kenya Defence Forces and local security units have since launched a major joint security operation in the area to hunt down the perpetrators. Locals believe the attack is part of a growing terror threat in the region, especially near the Kenya-Somalia border where Al-Shabaab militants have been active.
