Tensions in Kenya’s political landscape escalated this week after former Economic Advisor Moses Kuria directly accused former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of masterminding the 2023 raid on retired President Uhuru Kenyatta’s farm in Ruiru.
Kuria’s accusations came in response to a fiery interview Gachagua gave in Boston, United States, where he claimed that Kuria and Deputy President Kithure Kindiki were funding violent anti-government protests using former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga as a conduit.
“The recent violence was organised by Soprano (Kindiki) and Moses Kuria,” Gachagua said. “These people have given their minds to Ruto. They are being used to destroy their own people.”
Gachagua, speaking to diaspora supporters, alleged that the two Kenya Kwanza leaders are working under President William Ruto’s orders to dismantle unity in the Central Kenya region, where Gachagua still commands a loyal following.
Kuria Fires Back: Gachagua Behind Ruiru Chaos
In a swift rebuttal, Kuria, who currently leads the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), sensationally turned the tables, stating that it was actually Gachagua who was behind the 2023 raid on Uhuru Kenyatta’s Northlands Farm.
“It’s not me who should be explaining my actions,” Kuria posted on social media. “Why hasn’t the President addressed who planned the Ruiru raid?”
The Northlands Farm Raid: An Unresolved Political Flashpoint
The 2023 attack on Uhuru’s farm — widely condemned but never officially investigated — remains one of the most controversial events in recent political history. Despite strong public interest, President William Ruto has remained silent on the matter.
The farm raid, which coincided with Azimio la Umoja-led protests, resulted in vandalism, theft, and national outrage. Analysts at The Conversation and BBC News have noted that the event signaled growing divisions within the Mount Kenya political bloc.
For months, allies of Ruto denied any involvement, attributing the raid to “unknown goons.” However, Kuria’s latest claims directly implicate Gachagua, rekindling calls for a formal investigation.
Power Struggles in the Mountain
This political drama also highlights a broader power struggle in Central Kenya, particularly between Gachagua and a newer crop of Kenya Kwanza loyalists seen to be aligned with Ruto. Kuria’s claims could further fracture the Kenya Kwanza coalition ahead of 2027.
