Western Kenya – July 21, 2025 : There were at least four murders in Western Kenya over the weekend, as police launched investigations into violent deaths reported in Kakamega, Siaya, Tharaka, and Sulwe villages. The incidents, which include a child homicide, mob lynching, sudden collapse, and assault, have sparked renewed concerns about safety and justice in the region.
Boy, 9, Murdered in Dudi, Kakamega County
In Mudowera village, Kakamega, a 9-year-old boy tragically lost his life after a man known to his family allegedly assaulted and strangled him. The boy collapsed and died within the compound on Saturday, July 19.
Police responded quickly, arrested the suspect, and moved the body to the local mortuary for postmortem examination.
“The suspect is in custody, and the investigation is ongoing,” said a police official from Kakamega.
Ugandan Woman Collapses and Dies in Yala, Siaya County
In Yala, Siaya County, a Ugandan woman died shortly after complaining of severe stomach pain. She had just finished her supper when she suddenly collapsed.
Medical officers are now testing food samples she consumed to determine whether food poisoning caused her death.
“We have sent the food for analysis and will share results once available,” a local health officer confirmed.
Man Dies in Tharaka Six Days After Assault
In Maara, Tharaka County, a man identified as Kelvin Karani died in hospital after suffering injuries from an assault on July 13. Police say the attacker was someone Karani knew.
Karani had been undergoing treatment but succumbed to his injuries on Friday, July 19. Police have launched a manhunt for the suspect.
“We are pursuing the assailant and will present him in court once arrested,” stated Maara Sub-County police.
Mob Lynches Man in Sulwe Village
In Sulwe, Siaya County, angry residents stoned Hilary Odhiambo, 45, to death after accusing him of theft. Witnesses said the mob flushed him out of his house and carried out the lynching before police arrived.
Although police arrived later, they confirmed the suspect had already died.
“This was an act of lawlessness. People must allow justice to take its course,” Siaya County police said.
The officers moved the body to the mortuary and opened a criminal inquiry.
Police Urge the Public to Report, Not Retaliate
Following the spate of killings, police across Western Kenya are urging residents to avoid mob justice and report suspected criminals to authorities. They also emphasized the importance of community cooperation in investigations.
“No matter the crime, suspects should be handed over to us. Taking the law into your hands only adds to the problem,” police warned.
