A 30-year-old man tragically died while waiting to be healed through prayer at a church facility located in the Mukuru slums of Nairobi County, sparking renewed concern over the practices of some religious institutions.
Healing Prayer Turns Fatal
The deceased, Francis Inaweti Muchera, had reportedly been unwell and was taken by his wife to Feet of Jesus Christ Family Church on Tuesday, July 29, seeking spiritual healing through prayer.
According to a police report, the church’s pastor prayed over Francis, after which he allegedly fell asleep — only never to wake up again.
His wife reportedly waited for him to regain consciousness for close to an hour. When he remained unresponsive, she searched for the pastor, only to discover he had already left the church compound. Upon informing the pastor of her husband’s condition, police were contacted.
When officers from National Police Service arrived at the scene, they confirmed the man was dead and noted that his face appeared swollen. The body was moved to a local mortuary pending a postmortem examination, which police say will determine the next course of the investigation.
“The autopsy will inform the way forward,” said a police officer at the scene. “We are not ruling out anything at this stage.”
Church Operations Under Scrutiny
The incident comes at a time when there are mounting calls for regulation of churches operating without oversight, especially those linked to occultism or questionable healing practices.
Recent national scandals, such as the Shakahola massacre, have placed churches under heavy scrutiny. The Presidential Taskforce on Church Regulation, formed in the aftermath, proposed a framework to monitor rogue religious organizations across Kenya.
In April 2023, a mass grave was discovered in Kilifi County, where over 400 followers of cult leader Paul Mackenzie were found dead after allegedly fasting to death in the name of religion (BBC report).
What’s Next for the Church and Family?
Police have yet to confirm if any foul play is suspected in Francis Muchera’s death. The outcome of the autopsy will be critical in determining if charges will be brought against the church or individuals involved.
The family, meanwhile, awaits answers. The tragic death has left locals in Mukuru shocked, with several residents now questioning the authenticity and motives of small, unregistered churches operating in the area.
