President William Ruto has donated Sh1 million to support the family of Boniface Mwangi Kariuki, the hawker who was recently killed under controversial circumstances in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD), even as calls for justice grow louder.
The donation was delivered on behalf of the Head of State by Murang’a Woman Representative Betty Maina, during a visit to the family’s home in Githunguri village, Kangema, where friends and relatives gathered for a prayer meeting on Wednesday, July 2, 2025.
“This contribution is meant to ease the family’s burden as they prepare to lay their son to rest,” said Maina during the visit.
The family has announced that Boniface Mwangi’s burial will take place on Thursday, July 11, 2025. Meanwhile, they are demanding accountability from the government for his untimely and violent death.
“We appreciate the support from the President, but we demand justice. We want murder charges filed against the officers who took Boniface’s life,” said family spokesperson Abel Kinyanjui.
Mwangi, who earned a living by hawking face masks in the CBD, was reportedly killed by police officers during protests.
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has since launched investigations into the incident. However, the family insists that nothing short of murder charges will be accepted.
This case mirrors other recent high-profile cases involving police misconduct, including the controversial death of Albert Ojwang, which also triggered public demonstrations and political pressure.
