Narok County, Kenya – Tensions flared along the Kenya-Tanzania border on Wednesday, July 9, after a series of retaliatory killings left three people dead and one seriously injured.
The violence began when a Tanzanian national, identified as Marwa Ndatu, was shot dead under unclear circumstances while allegedly harvesting maize on the Kenyan side of the border in Chelchel area, Angata Barrikoi Location.
Police say the Tanzanian man was accused of theft, prompting a deadly confrontation in which he was fatally shot by unknown individuals in Kenya.
As news of his death spread across the border, a group of Tanzanian residents is reported to have launched a retaliatory attack, killing two Kenyan nationals believed to be working near the border on the Tanzanian side.
A third Kenyan who was reportedly with the group at the time narrowly escaped the mob attack and was rescued by Tanzanian police, who rushed him to a local hospital, where he remains in serious condition.
Police in Narok County and their Tanzanian counterparts are working to de-escalate the situation and prevent further violence. Security patrols have been intensified along the border.
The Kenya-Tanzania border, especially in rural regions like Angata Barrikoi, has long experienced disputes over farmland, grazing rights, and cross-border movements, but such retaliatory killings are rare and deeply concerning to local leaders and security officials.
