Nairobi, Kenya — Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested popular TikTok user Godfrey Mwasiaga Kakan Maiyo, accused of inciting violence against law enforcement officers and their families through a viral video shared on his social media account.
The suspect was arrested on Wednesday, July 10, at Kimathi House in Nairobi’s CBD, where he was allegedly running a private office under the business name LetaPeleka Logistics.
“Detectives trailed the suspect to Kimathi House, where he was operating a discreet office. He is currently in custody undergoing processing, pending arraignment,” the DCI confirmed in a statement.
Maiyo’s arrest comes as part of a nationwide crackdown on digital content creators and activists accused of spreading hate speech, incitement, and mobilizing violence during recent anti-government protests, including the deadly Saba Saba demonstrations.
On the same day, President William Ruto issued a strong warning to individuals behind attacks on police officers and destruction of public property, equating such acts to terrorism.
Speaking in Kilimani, where he inspected an ongoing affordable police housing project, Ruto said:
“Nimewavumilia ya kutosha, sasa mtanikoma (I have tolerated you enough). This is no longer protest—it is anarchy. And we will crush it without fear or favour.”
Ruto vowed that the government would deploy all legal means to protect lives, businesses, and institutions, warning that those orchestrating chaos would face the full force of the law.
The President also accused unnamed politicians of using social media influencers and digital activists to mobilize youth under the guise of civic action while allegedly pushing for unconstitutional regime change.
“To those plotting in the shadows, let me tell you clearly: if you have ambitions, prepare your policies and meet me in 2027. There is no shortcut, no backdoor,” Ruto declared.
The suspect is expected to be arraigned in court once investigations are complete. Authorities say they are reviewing the viral video in question and forensic analysis of his devices is underway
The government has increasingly expressed concern over the role of influencers, TikTokers, and Twitter/X activists in the planning and escalation of protests, many of which have turned violent in recent weeks.
With over 30 protest-related deaths and hundreds injured or arrested, law enforcement is now actively pursuing online figures accused of incitement and public disorder.
