Nairobi, Kenya – August 7, 2025
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has issued a stern warning and fined the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Ksh 2.5 million (approximately USD 20,000) after multiple security breaches marred the CHAN 2024 Group A match between Harambee Stars and DR Congo at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani on Sunday.

Chaos at Kasarani Sparks CAF Action

According to an official CAF Security Officer’s report, Kenya breached Articles 82 and 83 of the CAF Disciplinary Code following disorganized scenes during the high-stakes encounter that saw Kenya triumph 1-0.

The report outlined several violations:

  • A stampede at Gate 11
  • Unauthorized access to restricted Public Security Areas (PSAs)
  • A motorcycle dangerously navigating through crowded sections
  • Fires lit behind Block 18
  • State security personnel denying access to CAF protocol officers, including a VIP from the South African President’s Close Protection Unit

These lapses violated multiple CAF safety regulations, casting a shadow over Kenya’s ability to securely co-host the regional football showpiece.

Breakdown of the CAF Sanctions

CAF’s disciplinary committee imposed three specific penalties on FKF:

Offense Fine (Ksh) Fine (USD)
Stampede & unauthorized access 644,500 5,000
Obstruction & assault on CAF officials 1,289,000 10,000
Stadium fires Official Warning N/A

Total fine: Ksh 2.5 million
All fines must be paid within 60 days, failure to which additional sanctions may follow.

Warning from LOC Chair Nicholas Musonye

Nicholas Musonye, Chair of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), had earlier cautioned that any deviation from CAF safety protocols could attract harsh penalties. He urged fans to be more disciplined moving forward, especially as Kenya co-hosts CHAN 2024 alongside Uganda and Tanzania.

“We cannot afford to put our reputation at risk. These tournaments are watched globally and must reflect the highest standards of safety and organization,” said Musonye during a recent media briefing.

Kenya Risks Further Sanctions

CAF’s letter warns that further misconduct during upcoming CHAN 2024 matches could result in:

  • Bans on spectators
  • Disqualification from the tournament
  • Revocation of hosting rights

Kenya is expected to host more high-profile matches, and all eyes will be on whether FKF can enforce stricter crowd control and safety measures.

Final Thoughts

Kenya’s hosting of CHAN 2024 is under increased scrutiny. To maintain its position as a reliable football host nation, FKF must tighten security, collaborate better with CAF officials, and educate fans on stadium etiquette.
