ODM Secretary-General Draws a Red Line Over 2027 Political Alignments
Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna has sent shockwaves through the political scene after stating that he will resign from the party if it chooses to support President William Ruto’s re-election bid in the 2027 general election.
Speaking during a public event in Sabaoti, Trans Nzoia County, on Sunday, Sifuna emphasized that personal conviction must trump blind party loyalty, especially on matters of national leadership.
“I assure ODM supporters that my stance remains,” he said. “Raila himself has said this is a democratic party, where anyone can speak freely.”
Critics Call Him a Rebel, But Sifuna Stands Firm
Sifuna’s position comes amid internal party tensions, with critics branding him a “rebel” for consistently criticizing President Ruto’s government, despite ODM leader Raila Odinga collaborating with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) under the ‘broad-based’ government framework.
This arrangement led to opposition figures receiving government appointments, blurring the lines between government and opposition roles — a move that Sifuna says has robbed the party of ideological clarity.
“ODM no longer speaks with one voice,” he remarked. “We are now confusing supporters with mixed signals.”
“I Won’t Read a Statement Backing Ruto” – Sifuna
Sifuna clarified that as secretary-general, he is duty-bound to read official party statements — even ones that insult him — but supporting Ruto is a line he will not cross.
“If ODM endorses Ruto for 2027, I won’t be the one to read that statement. Let someone else, maybe [Nyando MP] Jared Okelo, do it,” he said, referencing internal comparisons between him and other party members.
His message was clear: if ODM backs Ruto, he will walk.
ODM at a Crossroads: Ideology vs Strategy
Observers say Sifuna’s declaration exposes deeper fissures within ODM, Kenya’s largest opposition party. The “broad-based government” approach has left some party loyalists confused about ODM’s true position.
Political analysts from The Elephant argue that ODM risks losing its identity ahead of 2027 if it does not clearly define its ideological stance.
Will Sifuna Resign? And What’s Next for ODM?
As public pressure mounts and factionalism grows within the party, all eyes are now on ODM leader Raila Odinga to clarify ODM’s 2027 election game plan. With Ruto’s popularity still polarizing, Sifuna’s threat may resonate with the party’s grassroots supporters.
Meanwhile, some ODM insiders are reportedly pushing for Sifuna’s resignation, accusing him of undermining party unity. But the Nairobi Senator appears unfazed.
Is ODM Losing Its Soul?
Sifuna’s stance reflects a growing internal demand for ODM to redefine its core principles. Whether the party chooses to remain in opposition, join hands with the ruling regime, or splinter further remains to be seen.
