Siaya County, Kenya — Tragedy struck in Rarieda, Siaya County, after a 23-year-old miner was killed in a fatal accident involving a stone crusher at a gold mining site in Miriha village, North Ramba sub-location.
The deceased, identified as Wycliffe Oduor, was operating the machine when it reportedly malfunctioned, crushing him instantly.
Police Launch Investigation into Mining Tragedy
According to a police incident report, the incident occurred on Thursday evening when Oduor was engaged in crushing stones at the gold mining site. The machine is believed to have suddenly jammed, fatally injuring him.
Local residents immediately informed the area Assistant Chief, Mr. Maurice Omondi, who quickly alerted officers from Ndori Police Station. Police visited the scene to document evidence and manage the situation.
The miner’s body was later transferred to Lwak Mission Hospital mortuary, where it awaits a postmortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
Mining Safety Concerns in Kenya
The tragedy has once again raised concerns over safety standards at small-scale mining sites in Kenya. According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Mining, lack of proper equipment maintenance and inadequate safety training remain major challenges in the sector.
This incident adds to the growing list of fatalities linked to unsafe mining operations in rural parts of the country.
