There was panic and confusion at the Eldoret Police Station after a senior police officer surrendered to authorities moments after shooting and injuring his wife at their home in Ainabkoi, Uasin Gishu County.
According to police reports, the officer — a Deputy Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer (DCIO) based in Sotik, Rift Valley — shot his wife in the early hours of Sunday morning following a domestic altercation.
The officer, who holds the rank of Inspector, had reportedly travelled from his workstation to Ainabkoi for the weekend when the incident occurred.
Witnesses said a heated argument erupted at their home in the Corner Ndogo area before gunfire was heard.
The victim sustained a gunshot wound to the left cheek and was rushed to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret, where she is reported to be in stable condition.
Shortly after the incident, the officer presented himself at the Eldoret Police Station, where he confessed to being involved in a shooting and voluntarily surrendered his DUMA pistol, which was loaded with 14 rounds of 9mm ammunition.
Police confirmed that he was immediately disarmed and detained pending further investigations into the domestic shooting.
Senior officers have since launched inquiries to establish the circumstances that led to the altercation and the motive behind the shooting.
Authorities say domestic disputes involving law enforcement officers have been on the rise, with several cases reported in recent months — prompting the National Police Service (NPS) to intensify counselling and mental health support programs for its members.
