Nairobi, Kenya – October 17, 2025: Three people died and several others were injured on Thursday when police opened fire during chaos at Kasarani Stadium, where Kenyans gathered to view the body of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Witnesses said the violence erupted around 3:00 p.m. when supporters tried to storm the VIP section holding Odinga’s casket.
Crowd Chaos Turns Deadly
According to eyewitnesses, the crowd had waited for hours under the sun before some impatient mourners attempted to break through the barricades. As chairs and stones flew, police responded with live bullets and teargas.
Panic spread fast. Hundreds fled from the terraces as clouds of teargas filled the air. Two critically injured people received first aid from National Youth Service (NYS) medics before ambulances rushed them to nearby hospitals.
Police sources said the shooting started after a group of rowdy youth ignored repeated warnings to stay behind security lines. The National Police Service promised to release a full statement once investigations conclude.
Chaos Follows Earlier Scuffles at JKIA
The public viewing had already been moved from Parliament to Kasarani after disorder broke out earlier at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
When Odinga’s body arrived from India aboard a Kenya Airways flight, dozens of supporters breached airport security to get close to the casket. Authorities struggled to control the crowds despite heavy deployment by NYS and police units.
Security officials said confusion over entry points and conflicting instructions from event marshals worsened the situation.
