Raila Odinga Junior has confirmed that his uncle, Dr. Oburu Odinga, has convened a family meeting scheduled for February 1, amid growing internal tensions within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) following the death of longtime party leader Raila Odinga.
In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, January 23, Raila Junior distanced himself from political wrangles, stressing that he is not a politician and should not be dragged into ODM succession debates.
“I’m not a politician. I love everyone and respect everyone. My uncle has agreed to a family meeting on the 1st. I would like it sooner. I don’t know what is happening—musiniingishe kwa hizo siasa,” he wrote.
His remarks come at a time of heightened political speculation within ODM, following a Kibera rally attended by Winnie Odinga and Raila Junior, where calls for party renewal and a National Delegates Conference (NDC) were interpreted by some as questioning the current leadership direction and succession timeline.
ODM party leader Dr. Oburu Oginga has since dismissed claims that the party plans to expel any members, insisting that ODM remains united as it gears up for future political engagements ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Raila Junior’s comments also surfaced shortly after President William Ruto nominated Dr. Ida Odinga, Raila Odinga’s widow, for appointment as Kenya’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)—a move that has further fueled political discussion around the Odinga family and ODM’s future.
