NACADA Raids Major Counterfeit Alcohol Manufacturing Hub in Joska

The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) on Friday raided a major counterfeit alcohol manufacturing hub in Joska, Machakos County, in an intelligence-led operation targeting illicit brewers and distributors.

The afternoon raid was conducted by a multi-agency security team and uncovered what authorities described as a large-scale counterfeit alcohol operation running from an outlet within the busy Joska township.

During the operation, officers recovered hundreds of empty 250-millilitre bottles branded with labels of at least seven popular second-generation spirit brands. The bottles were allegedly prepared for refilling and distribution to unsuspecting consumers.

Also seized were large quantities of bottled counterfeit and expired alcoholic drinks believed to have been ready for sale within Joska and neighbouring areas. Authorities said the illegal products posed a serious public health risk.

One suspect was arrested at the scene and taken into police custody as investigations continue. Officials believe the operation may be linked to a wider criminal syndicate involved in the production and distribution of illicit alcohol.

Speaking after the raid, NACADA Chief Executive Officer Dr Anthony Omerikwa said the operation was part of intensified enforcement efforts following renewed government directives to curb the spread of illegal alcohol.

“The presence of branded bottles, labels and packaging materials points to a well-organised network with established distribution channels,” Omerikwa said.

Public health experts have repeatedly warned that counterfeit alcohol often contains dangerous substances such as methanol, which can cause blindness, organ failure or death.

Residents of Joska welcomed the crackdown, saying they had long suspected illegal alcohol-related activities in the area and expressed hope that the operation would help protect lives and restore safety in the community.

Investigations are ongoing as authorities move to dismantle the entire network behind the illicit trade.
