Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has firmly denied reports alleging that his administration has ceded critical county functions to the national government.
The governor was responding to a Citizen TV report aired on Tuesday, February 10, which claimed Sakaja had signed an agreement with President William Ruto to transfer several county responsibilities to the national government.
According to the report, functions allegedly taken over include garbage collection and disposal, public works, road construction and maintenance, as well as water supply services.
The claims sparked criticism from Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, who termed the alleged move unlawful and questioned the legality of such a transfer.
However, Sakaja dismissed the assertions as false.
“Fake news. No functions or roles have been ceded,” the governor stated, maintaining that Nairobi County remains fully in charge of its constitutional mandate.
The controversy emerged just days after President Ruto said he would work closely with Sakaja to improve Nairobi’s infrastructure.
“I will come here with my work on affordable housing, cleaning, and markets, and I know the people of Nairobi will decide from there,” Ruto said.
