The Kenya Red Cross is mourning the death of long-serving aqua rescue volunteer Samuel Wanyonyi Wangila, who died while responding to a rescue mission in Nairobi.
Wangila was electrocuted after coming into contact with a live electric cable submerged in the Mbagathi River while searching for the body of a boy who had drowned near the Highrise area.
The incident occurred on Tuesday in Mukuru Kayaba, where a team of Red Cross rescuers had been deployed to retrieve the body.
According to officials, Wangila accidentally touched the live cable while conducting the search in the river, leading to the fatal electrocution.
Fellow rescuers rushed him for medical assistance, but efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Mater Hospital.
The volunteer had served with the Kenya Red Cross for more than 15 years, dedicating his time to emergency response and rescue operations across the country.
The humanitarian organisation described Wangila as a committed and courageous volunteer who lost his life while helping others.
