A 14-year-old boy was shot and injured during a chaotic confrontation between police officers and a rowdy crowd in Huruma on Tuesday evening.
Police Operation Turns Chaotic
According to police, the incident occurred at around 5:00 p.m. as officers attempted to arrest a suspect linked to a robbery with violence case reported in Githurai on April 15, 2026.
The suspect had been tracked to a shop along Starehe Road within Huruma.
Suspects Freed by Mob
Police managed to apprehend and handcuff three suspects before the situation escalated.
A hostile crowd gathered at the scene, with some individuals reportedly armed with crude weapons. The mob began pelting officers with stones and blocked their exit.
In the ensuing chaos, the crowd overpowered the officers and freed the suspects from custody.
Warning Shots Fired
As tensions heightened, officers fired warning shots into the air in an attempt to disperse the crowd.
The officers later managed to escape in different directions, though two of them sustained injuries during the confrontation.
Minor Shot in the Leg
Shortly after the incident, it was reported that a Grade 8 pupil had been shot in the leg.
The boy was rushed to MSF Hospital, where he received treatment and was reported to be in fair condition.
Re-Arrest of Suspects
Later, undercover officers on patrol encountered two individuals still in handcuffs attempting to flee.
The suspects were re-arrested and taken to Huruma Police Station, where they remain in custody.
Investigations Underway
Police have launched investigations into the incident, including the circumstances that led to the shooting of the minor and the actions of the crowd that interfered with the arrest.
The incident raises fresh concerns over public interference in police operations and the safety of civilians during such confrontations.
