A 20-year-old student from the Kenya Medical Training College, Shayla Chabet, has been found dead in Rafina area, Karatina, Nyeri County, in a case police are investigating as rape and murder.
Last Movements Captured on CCTV
According to reports, Chabet had earlier met a university student in Nyeri before the two later reunited in Karatina, where they spent the day together and went out at night.
CCTV footage captured her final moments as she left a house in Rafina heading towards town. The man believed to be the last person seen with her is then seen following and diverting her path.
Night Out Turns Tragic
It is reported that the pair had been drinking at a local club before leaving while intoxicated.
The suspect later claimed they were attacked by unknown individuals, alleging he fled the scene during the incident and left Chabet behind.
Body Found in Farm
Her body was discovered on Sunday morning by a farm worker, dumped in a farm under disturbing circumstances.
Reports indicate her neck had been wrapped with her trousers and a belt.
Suspect Arrested
Investigations have now focused on Vincent Bett, who has been arrested and detained for 14 days.
Police say his account of being robbed has been contradicted by CCTV footage and mobile location data, which allegedly place him near the crime scene.
