A police officer was injured following an accidental shooting during an operation to restrain a suspected armed man at Kabaa Market in Mwala Sub-County.
Operation Following Tip-Off
According to police, officers from Kabaa Police Post responded to a report on the night of April 11 about a man, identified only as “Botswana,” who was allegedly armed with a pistol at a local bar.
The officers, who were on foot patrol, proceeded to the scene accompanied by the informant who had raised the alarm.
Struggle Turns Chaotic
Upon arrival, police attempted to restrain the suspect, who reportedly became violent.
The informant, described as a licensed firearm holder, assisted officers in subduing the suspect.
During the struggle, the suspect allegedly struck the informant’s right hand, causing him to accidentally discharge a firearm.
Officer Shot in the Leg
The bullet struck one of the officers on the left leg below the knee.
Despite the incident, the suspect was eventually subdued.
No Firearm Found
A search conducted after the arrest revealed that the suspect was not armed with a gun as initially feared.
Instead, officers recovered a metallic hammer tucked in his waistband.
Injured Officer Receiving Treatment
The injured officer was rushed to Machakos Level 5 Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.
Investigations Ongoing
The firearm used in the incident—a Glock pistol loaded with 12 rounds of 9mm ammunition—has been secured and placed in the armoury alongside the recovered hammer.
Authorities have launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accidental discharge.
