The Orange Democratic Movement and the United Democratic Alliance have moved to ease growing tensions within the broad-based government through renewed dialogue.
High-Level Meeting at State House
President William Ruto and ODM Party Leader Oburu Oginga on Thursday chaired a joint meeting of their parties’ steering committees at State House Nairobi.
The meeting focused on strengthening collaboration and identifying areas of mutual interest between the two political outfits.
Plan for ‘Coalition of Equals’
The leaders agreed to continue internal consultations across party organs to build consensus on priority issues and develop a framework for a formal coalition.
Part of the resolution includes forming a Broad-Based Management Committee comprising party leaders, selected Cabinet Secretaries, and Majority and Minority Leaders in Parliament.
The committee will coordinate legislative and executive agendas to enhance efficiency and service delivery.
Commitment to Dialogue
Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to constructive engagement and inclusive governance, signaling efforts to stabilise the partnership amid rising political friction.
ODM Raises Concerns
The talks come against the backdrop of simmering tensions, with ODM raising concerns over remarks by some UDA officials.
ODM accused certain leaders of making “unwarranted public utterances” that risk creating anxiety and disquiet among its supporters.
“As a party that believes in its principles… we demand respect from the UDA party,” ODM said in a statement.
Background of the Alliance
The broad-based government arrangement was formed in early 2025 under President Ruto and the late Raila Odinga.
The deal aimed to foster national unity, reduce the cost of living, and improve service delivery through shared governance.
Political Implications Ahead of 2027
While the arrangement has brought major political rivals into one administration, it has also blurred the line between government and opposition.
Analysts say the evolving dynamics could significantly shape alliances and strategies ahead of the 2027 General Election, as both parties seek to balance cooperation with political competition.
