Detectives have arrested a man suspected of participating in the torching of a motor vehicle during the violent fuel-price protests that rocked Githurai and sections of Thika Road in May.
The suspect, identified as Elisha Karanja Gatwa, was apprehended in Ruiru following investigations by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), who linked him to the arson attack at Githurai Roundabout.
DCI Links Suspect to Vehicle Torching
According to the DCI, detectives developed crucial leads after examining evidence gathered from the scene, ultimately identifying Gatwa as one of the individuals believed to have been involved in setting the vehicle ablaze during the demonstrations.
The suspect is currently in police custody undergoing processing as investigators continue gathering evidence.
Authorities say the arrest marks a significant breakthrough in efforts to hold those responsible for violence and destruction witnessed during the protests accountable.
More Arrests Expected
The DCI has indicated that investigations remain active and that detectives are pursuing additional suspects believed to have participated in the arson attack and other criminal activities during the demonstrations.
Police warned that anyone found culpable will face legal action.
“The suspects involved in criminal acts during the protests will be pursued and subjected to the full force of the law,” investigators said.
Fuel Price Protests Turned Chaotic
The arrest comes weeks after widespread unrest erupted in Githurai and neighbouring areas along Thika Road following public anger over rising fuel prices.
The demonstrations coincided with a nationwide strike by players in the transport sector, causing major disruptions to transport services across key highways and urban centres.
Businesses were affected, traffic was paralysed, and several incidents of vandalism and property destruction were reported.
Over 200 Arrested During Demonstrations
According to Nairobi Regional Police Commander Issa Mohamud, at least 225 people were arrested in connection with the protests and related disturbances.
The strike was eventually called off after the government announced a series of interventions aimed at easing pressure on transport operators.
Among the measures announced were a reduction in diesel prices, insurance reforms, and protection of public service vehicle (PSV) operators from vehicle auctioneering.
Investigations Continue
As detectives continue pursuing additional suspects, authorities have reiterated their commitment to bringing to justice those involved in acts of violence, arson, looting, and destruction of property during the demonstrations.
The latest arrest is expected to provide investigators with further leads as they seek to establish the full network behind the Githurai arson attack.
