White House Names Career Diplomat Henry Wooster for Top Kenya Posting

President Donald Trump has nominated veteran diplomat Henry Wooster as the next United States ambassador to Kenya, marking a significant development in diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The nomination was announced by the White House on June 1, with Wooster set to assume the role pending approval by the U.S. Senate.

In a statement, the White House formally named Wooster as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States to the Republic of Kenya.

Henry Wooster to Succeed Meg Whitman

Wooster is expected to succeed Meg Whitman, who served as the United States ambassador to Kenya from August 2022 until her resignation in November 2024 following the U.S. presidential election.

His appointment comes at a time when Kenya and the United States continue to deepen cooperation in trade, security, health, and regional diplomacy.

Extensive Diplomatic Experience

A career member of the U.S. Senior Foreign Service, Wooster brings decades of diplomatic and foreign policy experience to the position.

According to the U.S. government, he currently serves as Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Maghreb and Egypt in the State Department’s Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs.

Throughout his distinguished career, Wooster has held several influential diplomatic roles, including:

  • Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Paris, France
  • Deputy Chief of Mission and Charge d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Amman, Jordan
  • Political Counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad, Pakistan
  • Director for Central Asia at the National Security Council
  • Foreign Policy Advisor to the Commanding General of the U.S. Joint Special Operations Command

He also served as Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Iran and headed the Office of Iranian Affairs at the U.S. State Department.

Strong Academic and Language Credentials

Wooster holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Amherst College and a Master of Arts degree from Yale University.

In addition to his diplomatic expertise, he is known for his linguistic abilities. He speaks French and Russian fluently and has working knowledge of Arabic, Farsi, and Syriac/Aramaic.

Senate Approval Awaited

Before officially taking up the Nairobi posting, Wooster’s nomination must be vetted and confirmed by the U.S. Senate.

If confirmed, he will become Washington’s chief diplomatic representative in Kenya, overseeing one of America’s most important partnerships in East Africa.

The nomination underscores the strategic importance of Kenya in U.S. foreign policy, particularly in areas such as regional security, counterterrorism, trade, and diplomatic engagement across the Horn of Africa.
