Fresh details have emerged in the investigation into the deadly Utumishi Girls Academy dormitory fire after suspects reportedly disclosed what motivated the incident that claimed the lives of 16 students and left dozens of others injured.

According to information obtained by investigators, the students currently in police custody cited several grievances against the school administration that allegedly contributed to the decision to stage a protest that ended in tragedy.

Exam Date Change Among Key Complaints

Reports indicate that one of the major issues raised by the suspects was the school’s decision to reschedule examinations.

The students allegedly told investigators they were unhappy after examination dates were moved from June 16 to June 2, a move they felt put pressure on learners and disrupted their preparations.

Detectives are investigating whether the dissatisfaction over the revised academic schedule played a significant role in the planning of the incident.

Cultural Event Fee Also Sparked Frustration

The suspects are also said to have complained about the introduction of an entrance fee for an upcoming cultural event at the school.

According to reports, some students viewed the additional charges negatively, further increasing tensions between learners and the administration.

Investigators believe the growing frustrations may have contributed to the unrest that preceded the fire.

Influence From Nearby School Strike

Another factor reportedly raised during questioning was peer influence from a neighbouring boys’ school that had recently experienced a strike.

According to investigators, the students claimed the unrest at the nearby institution influenced their thinking and encouraged discussions about staging a protest at Utumishi Girls Academy.

Authorities are examining whether external influences may have contributed to the decisions that led to the tragic incident.

Plan Allegedly Executed Within Hours

Preliminary investigations suggest the plan was allegedly conceived at around 9:00 pm before being carried out approximately three hours later, shortly after midnight.

Detectives suspect that a group of Form Three students may have played a central role in organising and executing the plan.

The fire quickly spread through the dormitory, resulting in one of the worst school tragedies in recent years.

Investigations Continue

The suspects remain in police custody as homicide detectives continue gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses.

Authorities are expected to rely on forensic evidence, CCTV footage and witness statements to establish individual responsibility and determine exactly how the fire was started.

The tragedy has reignited national conversations about school safety, student welfare, conflict resolution mechanisms and the need for stronger measures to prevent unrest in learning institutions.

As investigations continue, families of the victims and the nation await answers on the circumstances that led to the devastating loss of young lives.
