The official website of President William Ruto has been hacked, with attackers replacing the homepage content with messages targeting the Head of State and demanding a cryptocurrency ransom.
A review of the website on Saturday, July 18, showed that the official information had been removed and replaced with unauthorised content, including a Bitcoin wallet address and a warning threatening to release unspecified information unless payment was made.
The attackers reportedly demanded a ransom of about KSh8 million in Bitcoin.
State House confirms cyberattack
State House confirmed that it was aware of the breach and said its information and communication technology (ICT) team was working to restore the website while investigating the incident.
Authorities have not revealed the identity of the attackers or confirmed whether any sensitive government information was accessed during the cyberattack.
Cybersecurity concerns rise
The incident has renewed concerns over the security of Kenya’s critical digital infrastructure, especially government platforms that provide public information and services.
Cybersecurity experts have continued to warn that government websites remain potential targets for hackers seeking financial gain, disruption or access to sensitive systems.
Investigations into the breach are ongoing as efforts continue to restore the President’s official website.
