Detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, launched a high-profile raid at the residence of Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi, intensifying an ongoing investigation into alleged embezzlement and conflict of interest within the county government.
The early morning operation saw EACC officers seize documents and electronic devices believed to hold crucial evidence in the case.
Governor Wamatangi was taken in for questioning, along with nine other senior county officials who were also arrested the same morning.
According to the EACC, the probe centers on suspected misappropriation of public funds and suspicious dealings within Kiambu County’s administration. Pressure has been mounting on the anti-graft body to act amid growing concerns over financial mismanagement.
During his arrest, Governor Wamatangi was spotted waving to onlookers from the backseat of an SUV as he was driven away by detectives.
The scene outside his home quickly turned tense as groups of residents gathered to protest, demanding his immediate release.
Some demonstrators chanted anti-President William Ruto slogans, accusing the Head of State of being complicit in what they claimed was a politically motivated crackdown.
The arrested officials were later taken to EACC headquarters for further interrogation.
This dramatic turn of events follows calls made two months ago by Kiambu Senator Karungo Wa Thang’wa, who urged the EACC to investigate changes in the county’s payment system.
The senator alleged that Governor Wamatangi had shifted from an automated system to a manual one, paving the way for ghost workers and resulting in the loss of Ksh390 million.
EACC CEO Abdi Mohamud is expected to issue an official statement on the arrests later today as the nation awaits further developments in what could become one of the most significant corruption cases of the year.
